Depth of field & hyperfocal

Pick a lens, focal length, aperture, and subject distance. The band is drawn to scale on a log distance axis, so you can see focus fall away.

The maths behind it: the hyperfocal distance is H = f + f²/(N·c), where f is the focal length, N the f-number, and c the circle of confusion (0.020 mm on this sensor). Focus there and everything from half that distance to infinity is acceptably sharp. Near and far limits at a subject distance s follow from H; once s reaches H, the far limit runs to infinity.
